Swanton woman emphasizes healthy choices to cut risk
of coronary disease

Cumberland Times-News
— CUMBERLAND — Joanna Guy, who was crowned Miss
Maryland 2012 Saturday night, plans to use her title to network around
the state and raise awareness of a cause that is near to her heart. Guy
works to educate people, especially young females, about the risks of
heart disease and benefits of a heart-healthy lifestyle.
Guy’s
personal platform, Heart to Heart: Raising Awareness for Healthy Hearts,
was inspired by her grandparents, all four of whom suffered from heart
disease or stroke.
“As Miss Maryland, I am committed to serving
as a positive role model for youth and an ambassador for our state,”
said Guy, 20. “I look forward to making appearances in schools,
communities and to working with business people and public officials
throughout Maryland. Of course I am also thrilled and honored to
represent Maryland at Miss America.”
Guy is the first person to
be named Miss Maryland and Miss Maryland Outstanding Teen, according to
Courtney Thomas, business manager for Miss Maryland. Guy, who is
from Swanton, is the second woman from Garrett County to be crowned Miss
Maryland. In 1990, Kimberly Ann Grimm Weimer of Mountain Lake Park was
crowned Miss Maryland.
“She (Guy) is going to be an excellent
title holder,” said Thomas. “She is very accomplished academically and
will represent Maryland very well.”
Guy also plans to promote and
raise funds for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, the national
platform of the Miss America organization.
Guy recently made a
trip to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va., to visit sick
children.
“It was great to see the kids and put a face to the
cause. It touched something powerful inside,” said Guy. “The great thing
about the Children’s Miracle Network is that all the money that is
raised goes towards local hospitals. To know that the money is locally
going towards Ruby Memorial is fantastic. I love how they do that.”
Guy’s advocacy of both the national and personal platform will
involve speaking appearances, a blog and fundraising through special
events.
This week Guy will travel to the Alpha Phi Foundation
convention in Phoenix to perform in a talent showcase to raise money for
cardiac care and research. She was selected as one of the five
performers in a national talent competition sponsored by the foundation
before winning the Miss Maryland title.
“I’m doubly excited now,
because I can support the foundation’s philanthropic work as both a
collegiated member of Alpha Phi and as Miss Maryland,” said Guy.
This was Guy’s first Miss Maryland pageant. At the time of her crowning,
she was the reigning Miss Queen State. Guy’s passion for pageants was
sparked when she became involved in the Maryland’s Outstanding Teen.
Winning the Miss Maryland title will help Guy serve her community, pay
for law school and help her become her best.
“By becoming a
public figure I will have access to and will be able to get my foot in
the door to places where I have not had the opportunity before,” said
Guy.
For winning the Miss Maryland competition, Guy re-ceived a
$10,000 scholarship, additional scholarship awards and several other
prizes. She won the swimsuit and talent preliminary competitions and was
the overall winner in interview. She performed a Broadway vocal
selection for her talent.
Guy will represent the state in the
2013 Miss America pageant to be held Jan. 8 through 12 at Planet
Hollywood in Las Vegas. She has been on the Miss America stage before,
having performed the national anthem during the 2009 pageant, when she
was named third runner-up as Miss America’s Outstanding Teen.
A
2009 graduate of Southern High School, Guy is a senior at Cornell
University in Ithaca, N.Y., where she is majoring in government with a
minor in music. She is a member of the Cornell University chorus and a
soloist with the After Eight a capella group.
Guy also serves as
the vice president for recruitment of the Delta Chapter of Alpha Phi at
Cornell and is a certified seminar leader in the campus Panhellenic
community.
With the goal of attending law school and pursuing a
career in public service, during the summer of 2011, Guy worked as an
intern for Sen. Ben Cardin and this summer she will be employed as a
research assistant at the Baltimore firm of Goodell, DeVries, Leech &
Dann LLP.
Guy is a 2009 Congressional Award for Youth winner and
in the same year was the only female student in Maryland to earn
scholarships in both academic achievement and talent in the arts as a
Maryland Distinguished Scholar. Guy has also held membership in the
National Honor Society, was an Intel International Science Fair winner
and Discovery Channel national finalist.
